Karla Flores-Celis holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a doctoral degree in Public Mental Health from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Institute of Psychiatry. Her research career has focused on the exploration of the intersection of abortion and mental health, abortion and stigma, non intentional pregnancy, and reproductive autonomy. Based on her expertise in systematic reviews and evaluation of scientific evidence, she has led research and consulting teams for well-grounded advocacy strategies. She collaborated with universities and non governmental organizations to conduct studies on violence against women, femicide and sexual harassment. As Director of Domestic Violence for the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health at the National Ministry of Health in Mexico, she spearheaded the development of the first National Technical Guideline for Safe Abortion in Mexico and contributed to ensure qualified and accessible healthcare through the implementation of a national network of public safe abortion services.
